The closure
The closure email gives you nothing to argue with — that is its design. But Amazon's systems never act on nothing. Something in your account's record tripped a rule, and the documented patterns are few enough to check, one by one, against your own history. The reason you find decides which fight you have.
| Pattern | What it looks like | The tell in your history |
|---|---|---|
| Linked account | Another account — a relative's, a household member's, an old account of yours — was closed or compromised, and yours shared a device, address, payment method, or login history with it. | A family member's account trouble shortly before yours. One documented 2026 case: a US account restricted because a relative's account overseas was phished. |
| Gift-card source | Cards bought from resale sites or with tainted payment methods upstream got flagged when redeemed. | The closure followed redeeming cards you didn't buy from a major retailer yourself. |
| Return record | Warnings, "wrong item" or "empty box" records accumulated into a closure. | A warning letter in your past, or refund denials you thought were settled. |
| Payment dispute | A bank chargeback — yours, or on a shared payment method — answered with a closure. | A dispute filed in the weeks before the closure. |
| Identity verification failure | Amazon demanded documents (the BBB notes a standing pattern of added information demands on refunds) and the account failed or missed the check — one buyer was locked out by a two-factor phone number he no longer had. | A verification request you couldn't complete. |
Each pattern has a different strongest door and a different honest grade. A linked-account closure is a mistaken-identity case — often the most reversible, because the facts can be separated. A gift-card source closure turns entirely on receipts. A return-record closure is answered with your own computed history. Walking in with the wrong story — protesting innocence in general while the file says "linked account" — wastes the doors on a case they can't grade.
Work your history against the table. Then run the checker with the pattern you found, and read the door order for closed accounts.
Not sure which fight you're in? The free checker sorts it in four picks — what happened, the proof you hold, one date — and gives you your door, your steps, your deadlines, and an honest grade of your case. Run the checker →
