How return flags build — and how to stop.

Start with the fact Amazon will not print: there is no published return rate that is safe. A buyer with 31 returns in 281 orders — 11%, every reason honest — received the warning letter and was refused the number he crossed. Since the line is invisible, prevention is not about a percentage. It's about the records that accumulate underneath the percentage.

What accumulates

The habits that protect an account

  1. Return less by ordering more carefully — sizes, compatibility, the actual listing details. The cheapest return is the one never started. (Obvious, and still the largest single lever any buyer controls.)
  2. Give the true reason, every time. An accurate "wrong size" costs less than a strategic "defective."
  3. Return items in the condition you received them, with accessories — condition records are flag fuel.
  4. Keep every drop-off receipt until the refund posts. Your defense against a false integrity record is paper, and it expires if you throw it away.
  5. Contest false records promptly and in writing — a corrected record stops counting; an ignored one compounds.
  6. Buy gift cards from major retailers and keep the receipts. Resale-marketplace cards are the single most documented trigger of balance voids.

Already warned? The reset

A warning is scored on trajectory. The documented shape of the accounts that survive warnings: they reply to the letter with their real numbers, and then the pattern visibly changes — fewer returns, accurate reasons, receipts kept, no new-account games. Ninety days of that pattern is the strongest document you can add to your file. The kit's reset plan lays it out week by week. The warning page covers the letter itself.

Not sure which fight you're in? The free checker sorts it in four picks — what happened, the proof you hold, one date — and gives you your door, your steps, your deadlines, and an honest grade of your case. Run the checker →
